This is a pretty cool project. The idea is to use a digital SLR camera with a movie mode to take a short movie of a still scene while panning a laser in a controlled way. Then using software, you can extract a 2.5d depth map. Below is a rendering of the gearbox to drive the laser servo, possibly from the camera hot shoe.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on.
